Incredible Big Bend Narional Park
Incredible Big Bend National Park

My husband and I spent a week hiking in Fort Davis SP and Big Bend NP in 2014 and what an incredible week it was. West Texas will blow you away with its beauty, varied landscapes, artist culture and respect for nature. This area is not easy to get to and not crowded, and most definitely worth the trip. We brought a car load of fresh food in a huge cooler and I’m so glad we did as the fresh and cheap options are limited here, but none the less the trip was outstanding.

Marfa

Hotel Paisano – jett’s Grill at the hotel offers one mixed vegetable entree that they will make vegan, and a portobello mushroom burger that they will also make vegan. They weren’t awesome but the dining options in this town are limited, and the patio is nice with a huge fountain located at the entrance of the historic hotel. We spent a few hours relaxing here on a cool late summer night and had a great time. The hotel is flooded with tourists and new locals, and everyone was pretty friendly.

Fort Davis

Blue Mountain Bistro – this restaurant was excellent, pricey with great service, but such a nice treat. They offer a vegetarian vegetable/quinoa dish that they made vegan for me, and it was outstanding. They have a nice patio although it was closed the night we were there, but the restaurant was quaint and filled with locals and tourists alike.

Big Bend

Chisos Lodge Restaurant – you’re definitely not coming to Big Bend for the food, but none the less the food here was disappointing and not fresh. They offer a portobello mushroom vegetable dish and a black bean burger, both of which tasted frozen, but you’re in Big Bend, and at least an hour drive from a city, so you can’t really complain. After a full day of hiking there’s not much else to do and you’re too tired to drive, so the lodge’s restaurant is what you get. The restaurant has incredible views of the land you spent your day hiking in, so enjoy the view and stay focused on the beauty of what’s around you.
